How to fill the interior of a mesh object in 3D Studio

by JCF 2/3/99

The best way to make a mesh object have some substance is to use opacity within the standard Material Editor. Then set the Opacity parameters in the Extended Parameters portion of the to something like:

Falloff: Out Subtractive
Amt: 100 IOR:1.0
I found that subtractive works best although it can be difficult to get the correct subtractive color scheme. Here this technique was applied to the mitochondrion (red) in the interior of this dendrite.

In some cases it may be desireable to create a copy of the object. One version with the above subtractive opacity can serve as the interior, while a different material is applied to the other version to provide the skin. In this case it may be desireable to use the Push modifier to slightly shrink the interior copy so that the skin is strictly visible.
