Sherrington - A physiologist’s Contribution to Neuron Doctrine

• Spinal reflex - late 1890’s he showed:

  • Unidirectional flow of information
    • if reticular then multidirectional
  • Synaptic Delay
    • if continuous “wire” then no delays
  • Coordinated action of many synapses
  • Both excitatory and inhibitory actions
  • Only excitatory actions propagated while inhibitory actions “stabilized” the neuron
