This dendrite (K21) was first published in Harris KM, Stevens JK (1989) Dendritic spines of CA1 pyramidal cells in the rat hippocampus: serial electron microscopy with reference to their biophysical characteristics. J.Neurosci. 9:2982-2997 (1,922Kb PDF). Dr. Josef Spacek re-surfaced it using our more modern tools for display on this website. Excitatory synapses are shown in red. Inhibitory synapses in blue. The dendrite has been rendered transparent in the bottom image to more clearly show the positions of all the synapses.
